Tips for Flying Without Paying For Baggage

I don't fancy the idea of paying for my luggage to fly in a dark, cold, noisy compartment.
Especially, at the prices the airlines are charging.
As a family of six, it hurts to pay $35-$50 per checked bag.

So, when we flew to California (actually to Las Vegas, rented a car and drove to LA because it is so cheap on Allegiant Airlines) for our first week of the kids Christmas break, I had a plan.

It involved bringing a child who looked a lot like Where's Waldo...

and a really cute toddler in jammies

who has skills

riding luggage through airports.

No, just kiddin. I just had to find a way to fit those pics in.

The real tip came from my backpack travels in Europe when I was twenty.
I carried a backpack full of rolled clothes (instead of folded).

On this trip, I made all the kids empty their school backpacks and proceeded to roll their t-shirts, jeans, sweatshirts and shorts and stack them like packed hot dogs in the bottom.
Mister Luke stood open-mouthed in awe of how much we were able to fit. Even his DS case, ipod, toothbrush, and book fit.

Each of the boys were able to fit all of their things in their backpacks. Large jackets and shoes were worn on the plane. Hottie Husband and I did the same.
We packed a carry-on roller for Little Bear (the one he is riding) and brought other roller suitcases filled with Christmas gifts for family.

It makes for a long trip through security, but the airlines have created a new monster with the charges for checking luggage.
It means more carry-on baggage to scan
and mothers expecting their children to act like Sherpas in airports.

Travel is just exhausting period. We are playing with the idea of going BACK to Hawaii. The thought of all that time in an airport and traveling though makes me almost not want to go. Love your Waldo pic...too funny:)

Fantastic idea! Very cleaver and I agree... the airlines have created their own monster!

P.S. I use the roll method for my packing all the time!
