Little Bear has recently developed this rash behind his ears. Rashes are not new to this family as Mister Luke had eczema as a baby and I feel like we have had every skin ointment, cream and treatment in this home at some point. In fact, I consider myself an expert on skin issues because of the amount of time I have spent treating them and researching. But, this one has me a little stumped although in the vague recesses of my mind, I think one of the other boys may have had this too.
It is a red, wet rash that crusts up . I showed it to the pediatrician at his 4 month check up and he said it looked like it could be cradle cap, but he wasn't sure. Hmmm, that didn't help much.
It does not seem painful to him when I wash behind his ears. I thought it might be yeast, so I put some Monistat cream on it. That hasn't helped much.
So I am calling on all the mommy advice out there. Any thoughts or suggestions? Here is a photo to help you in your expert diagnosis.

I could be completely wrong, but I think it's Eczema. Nolan has that and has had it since he was a baby. He won't let me scratch at the crusty stuff though- it hurts him.

It looks like yeast to me. But I'm just wondering how that would happen behind a little one's ear... The last yeast rash my guy had took 2 weeks to clear with nystatin twice daily. I'm glad it doesn't seem to bother him!

I wonder, does Little Bear sweat a lot? If so (and even if not) I would say it looks like a diaper rash. Have you tried some desitin? Are there any kind of bumps or (I know this is gross) any kind of pimples? If those show up I would say it was some kind of infection. Poor lil guy! Keep us posted.
Looks like a yeast rash to me, too. Sounds gross here, but have you tried smelling it? Yeast rashes have their own particular smell.
Are you keeping it dry? Try blowing cool air on to the area after cleaning it.
Does he have anything that looks like thrush in his mouth? That would up the chances of it being a yeast rash (milk dribbles from the mouth to behind the ear...)
We always used Butt Paste for diaper rash. Maybe you could give that a try. Poor baby!!
Just throwing this in ... really have no evidence to go on.
When they start to teeth, they dribble when they sleep. If they're on their back, it goes behind their ears and this place becomes always wet and added to a few germs and warmth adds to irritation.
Keeping it dry MAY help ... had one mum recommend to me cornflour.
I don't know why I'm commenting, because I am not a mommy and have no knowledge. I just hope you figure it out! :)
Hmm... looks like eczema to me, but it's hard to tell from a picture... It makes sense in the place that it is. My daughter tends to have flair-ups behind her knees during basketball season, when she sweats a lot. The dermatologist gave her a prescription for Cloderm after her first rash, and it always seems to clear it up. Poor babes, I know from Cate that it's really painful.
both my kids had that, I would put a greasy type of lotion or cream on it daily and it would eventually dissapear, something like Aquaphor or even some Neosporin, or the heaviest Eucerin they make. It is like cradle cap behind the ears.

Both my son and I have get eczema really bad, I'm talking about my son scratches till he bleeds and we both have super sensative skin. This looks like eczema to me. As you know even with ointments and creams in places like behind the ear and in the crevis behind the legs and where your arm bends I've seen it to look exactly like that it doesn't always clear up the problem when using the cream In sweaty places like that it's gonna take a lot longer to get rid of it. I would use the eczema cream make sure to keep it dry (he's not all sweaty) and if it doesn't go away in a week I'd take him to see the dermatologist that treated his eczema.

As far as the rash goes, I seem to remember a teaching colleage telling me to make sure and wash behind babies ears real well b/c rash could develop. She never specified exzema, heat, yeast, etc., just said to make sure I washed with warm soapy water at least once a couple of times a week.
Funny now that I have a toddler and preschooler, I never really do "wash behind the ears" so to speak! Hmmmm, might need to stop blogging and do some ear checking! LOL

Could it be a little bit of a heat rash and moisture back there? Try keeping it clean and cool, you can also try a little cornstarch.
Audrey has had something similar to your picture and that is what I have done.
I can't say I know what it is, but washing with Cetaphil cleanser has cleared up pretty much every crusty looking skin condition we've had around here. Just dab it on and off with a wet washcloth several times a day. But if you're something of a skin care expert, you've probably tried that already!
