Get Your Hopes Up

Mister Luke started reading a book this week called 100 Cupboards by N.D. Wilson for his book group. As we were reading together, there was a line that stood out to me.

The author is introducing a twelve year old boy.

He was not looking forward to reuniting with Aunt Dotty and Uncle Frank. Not because he in any way disliked them, but because he had led a life that had taught him not to look forward to anything.

His life had taught him not to look forward to anything.

So well worded that I hate to reword it. But, in other words

he didn't want to get his hopes up.

I get that. Sometimes you get your hopes up and you are disappointed.
Then it happens again and again and you learn, like this boy in this book has, not to look forward to anything.

When I read that line, I was struck at how deeply sad it was that a twelve year old would feel such a thing. But truly it is terribly sad at any age.

So, look forward!

Get your hopes up!

It is just too terribly sad not to.

I know having something to look forward to is what keeps me going. I usually feel depressed when a vacation is over because I looked forward to it for so long. I have to have that next thing to give me hope and purpose. Does that make sense?:)

Your post is an affirmation to me today! The title of my post today was, "Discouragement." Although I have moved past my title; your post was perfectly timed!

"Hope Floats!"

So true. Kill our hope and we have nothing to live for.

I have had to teach my stepsons to hope for the best but expect the worst when it comes to their mother. So sad!

Without hope you have nothing, it's important to keep it up.
