Being A Grown Up

I turned 38 a few days ago.
Thirty-eight is a fat number, round and curvy.
Thirty-seven felt skinnier, less developed.
I remember thinking 31 seemed better than 30 for the same reason.
Silly, I know.

This was the first birthday in our new state of Montana.
My childhood birthdays and even my grown-up birthdays have always been spent with family, food cooking on the barbecue and hanging out by the pool.

It was raining and cold this year on my birthday in Montana.
I kept saying that I had never had my birthday in the winter before.

Our friends Pete and Laura invited us over and created a beautiful day for us.
While it rained, we sat by the fire and played The New Yorker game.
The boys had nerf gun wars and built legos and later had squirt gun wars.
Then, the sun came out just in time for dinner.
We sat outside and had this lovely meal.
Pasta with an amazing bolognese sauce, arugula salad with a lemon vinaigrette, and kalamata olive bread.
Laura is an amazing cook and I love Italian food.
YUM!

Then, we had a fantastic birthday cake, made from scratch by Hottie Husband himself!

Isn't it lovely too?
I just love a pretty cake.

Here Laura and I are full of big smiles.
We finished off our day with the two of us hula hooping on the grass.
Sorry, no photo of that one.

I realized this year that I don't feel old, but I do have this sense of truly being a grown-up now.
For a long time, I felt like I was just pretending.
Perhaps it has come from finally finishing our dream home and having the courage to let it go.
Or from being brave enough to pack a u-haul with the man I love and take my children to a whole new place where we didn't know a soul.
Or perhaps it is from the knowledge that when I have courage, am brave and trust, then there is a provision.
Love.
Friends.
Life.
Family.
Joy.

that was good to read. being your 38 year old buddy :), you worded it well. it does feel different than 37, and often i don't feel like that with bdays. i think maybe 35 felt older too, b/c it made me think 5 more years to 40--now only 2. whoa!!! :) i am so glad your new friends lavished you with lots of love and HH did an amazing job on the cake--i am very impressed! excited to have you back from summer!

I never thought of a number as being "Fat". Interesting though!
I enjoyed being 37...I thought it was a good age..for me anyways.
I will turn 48 next May, and it has been something that I'm not looking forward to...maybe because it's a "Fat" number. Must be the #8.
maybe I'll just skip next years B-day, and just stay 47.

Happy belated birthday! Are we birthday twins? I turned 41 on the 26th of August.

Speaking of skinny and fat numbers, I like that 41 is skinny, but it feels really old to me. I guess 40 was such a milestone that I felt like I had reached my mark and birthdays should be over! LOL

The truth of the matter is that I really don't want to be in my 40s. Being 40 was fine...now being in my 40(s) PLURAL is not so okay.

BUT, I do have a new blessing in my life. We welcomed Luke Alexander into the world 4-weeks ago. So, I guess my little man will keep me young regardless of the number!

Glad all is well for you. The birthday dinner looked delicious!

Oh happy birthday friend. I'm so glad you were surrounded with your new friends and what looked like an amazing dinner. What a wonderful night!

I just went to Barnes and Noble today to find Laura's book. She's got me good and interested. Unfortunately they didn't have it. I'll probably just order it on Amazon. So cool that you have each other. I'm sorta jealous. Maybe I should pack up and head to Montana:)
