A Day With My Boy

Today was a good day.
It was one of those days where everything came together.
Nothing was rushed, nothing chaotic, nothing irritating.
A rare day.

Our morning was chocolate chip pancakes, preparing Nerf guns for a birthday party, and dancing to music.

We even entered a sporting goods store, my four boys and I, and there was not one reprimand necessary.
We lunched on fish tacos and burritos and still, no chaos.
Just laughter and conversation.

Then the two oldest went off to a birthday party that would keep them busy all day and I got the rest of my day with my six year old.
He skis all over our mountain— black diamonds, jumps, an occasional cliff.
But, today he wanted to try snowboarding.
So, Little Bear went into childcare for a nap and off we went to the mountain.

He was determined to buckle his own boots.

I just reveled in letting him choose the chair lift and the run where we should go.
As the third in the string of boys, he doesn't get in on the decision making very often.

He rocked at snowboarding.
But, that wasn't even the good part.
The good part was me thinking—
Goodness, this is a really great kid.

When you have a slew of kids or even just two, they often feed off each other and you don't get to see who they are on their own.
I got that gift today.
I got to see this little man all on his own.
And you know something— I was impressed by my six year old son.

When we were all snowed out, we sat in the lodge.
He with hot chocolate, me with coffee, sharing a giant cookie.
He was helpful, kind, well-mannered. I didn't have to do any reminding.
I basked in that feeling of — wow, he really is getting what we're trying so hard to teach.
And he is amazing.

I told him that we were on a date, just him and me.
A giant grin was his response.
It was a rare day.

What's your favorite kind of day?

Sephora GC giveaway ends Wed. at midnight. I know I said Tuesday, but I was confused by the holiday weekend. See yesterday's post for the rules.

I love everything about this post! I totally know what you mean. It's so special to get a kid all to yourself, every now and then.
